Historical and Archaeological Reassessment of Fahandej Castle in the Sa‘di Gorge of Shiraz: Evidence for Military, Religious, and Administrative Functions during and after the Sasanian Period

Abstract
Fahandej Castle is one of the historical structures of the city of Shiraz, located adjacent to the Allah-Akbar Gorge and atop the mountain overlooking it, and is today known among local people as Bandar Castle (Gale Bandar). The aim of this research is to examine Fahandej Castle based on geographical texts and archaeological findings, and the following questions are raised: (1) Based on the available evidence, in which period or periods was Fahandej Castle constructed? (2) What was or were the function(s) of the castle? The approach of the present study is descriptive–historical–analytical and has been conducted through fieldwork and documentary methods. In the analytical section, an attempt has been made to date the construction of the structure by means of a comparative analysis of some of its architectural features with similar examples. The results of the present study indicate that, based on the existing ceramic evidence, the construction technique using rubble stones, and the excavation of wells with rectangular mouths, the Sasanian period can be considered as the time of construction of the structure. It appears that the purpose of building the castle was to protect the entrance to the city of Shiraz, as the continuation of this route ended at Barm-e Delak. According to historical texts, the structure had functions such as a place for storing royal treasuries and serving as a refuge. Moreover, due to the presence of a fire temple, which is mentioned in some sources, a religious function can also be attributed to it; however, no archaeological evidence of the existence of a fire temple has yet been obtained. During the Qajar period, the wells of the castle were used for the execution of some convicts.
